Florida citizens have a constitutional and statutory right to access public records under Article I, Section 24 of the Florida Constitution and Chapter 119 of the Florida Statutes (the “Public Records Act”). This includes records maintained by the Office of the State Attorney, First Judicial Circuit of Florida provided they are not exempt or confidential by law.
Citizens can inspect or copy public records maintained by the State Attorney’s Office. This includes emails, memos, reports, and other documents created or received in official business.
Agencies must respond promptly to requests, through the law does not set a strict timeline. Reasonable delays may occur due to the size or complexity of the request.
Agencies can charge for copies, typically not exceeding $0.15 per page for standard copies, or for extensive use of resources (e.g., staff time).
Some records are exempt from disclosure, such as active criminal investigative information, grand jury materials, and confidential informants’ identities. Exemptions are detailed in Section 119.071 and other statutes.
Citizens are not required to explain why they want the records or provide identification when making a request.
